| What's New PUBLIC NOTICE On Tuesday, July 21, 2009, the Highland Water Works received notice that three (3) of seven (7) routine water samples collected on Monday, July 20, 2009, tested positive for total coliform. Exceeding one (1) coliform-positive sample per month exceeds the maximum contamination limit (MCL) for our community size and is considered a Tier 2 violation, requiring public notification. Pursuant to 327 IAC 8-2-8.1, three (3) repeat samples were taken for each positive routine sample. A total of nine (9) water samples were collected and all samples were coliform-negative (satisfactory). None of the samples tested positive for the presence of fecal coliform or e. coli. Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems. At this time, the system is in compliance as all subsequent routine water samples have all been coliform-negative.
