NORTH DRIVE PUMP STATION ENGINE GENERATOR PROJECT
Additional Pumping Stations Scheduled for Backup Generators

Bob Sutliff, Field Service Engineer, of Cummins NPower, LLC and Mike Pipta, Facilities Supervisor, for the Highland Public Works Department at the new North Drive Storm Water Pump Station.

Directed by the Highland Town Council, the Sanitary District of Highland recently placed into service a 500KW engine generator at the North Drive Storm Water Pump Station. The generator system has the capability of automatically switching to standby power for the pump station in the event of a power outage from NIPSCo. The North Drive Pump Station handles storm water from the area bordered by Grace Street, Liable Road, LaPorte Street, and the Little Calumet River. In the event of a power outage, automatic switch equipment will bring the generator online until normal power is restored. The engine generator operates on diesel fuel. The project was designed by NIES Engineering, Inc. and installed by Midwestern Electric, Inc. The engine-generator was supplied by Cummins NPower. Total project cost is $225,000.

As a part of the Little Calumet River Levee Project, the US Army Corps of Engineers replaced the existing North Drive Storm Water Pump Station, increasing the capacity of the station from 12,600 gallons per minute to 45,000 gallons per minute. Additionally, larger storm sewers were installed in the area by the Sanitary District in order to deliver storm water more efficiently to the pump station.

The Sanitary District has another engine generator project underway for the North 5th Street Storm Water and Sanitary Sewage Pumping Stations. Zonatherm Products, Inc. was awarded the contract at the December 2, 2008 Sanitary Board meeting to deliver two, 1000KW generator sets. The estimated date for completion of this project is May 9, 2009.

Total project cost is estimated at $840,000.  In all, Highland is investing $1,065,000 in backup generators in 2009.

KENNEDY AVENUE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
Grimmer Construction, Inc. has been awarded the contract, through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), for the Reconstruction of Kennedy Avenue between Ridge Road and the Little Calumet River in the amount of $7.32M. The project is a Federal-Aid Project with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) funding 80% of the project cost and the Town of Highland funding 20% of the project cost. The project includes the reconstruction of the full pavement section, curbs and sidewalk replacement, drainage improvements, lighting, traffic signals, water main replacement, and landscaping.

The project is scheduled to begin December 8, 2008 (weather permitting) and will continue through July, 2010. Lane restrictions will be in effect throughout most of the project. The first phase will close both southbound lanes of Kennedy Avenue between LaPorte Street and the Little Calumet River. Northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

Updates to the traffic control plan and project schedule will be posted on this website throughout the duration of the project.
